Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye and House of Representatives aspirant Emmanuel Fayose have urged Nigerians to reject President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

They made the call during a meeting with leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, warning that the country could face deeper economic hardship if Tinubu secures a second term.

Atiku, who was represented at the gathering by his spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, criticised what he described as a weakening of democratic institutions under the current administration.

Okonkwo argued that the National Assembly had not adequately exercised its constitutional responsibility to hold the executive accountable. He maintained that lawmakers should prioritise the interests of Nigerians rather than those of the President.

His remarks formed part of the opposition's broader criticism of the Tinubu administration ahead of the next presidential election.

Melaye also criticised the President's comparison of Nigeria's economic situation with that of Egypt, arguing that the comparison did not adequately reflect the challenges facing Nigerians.

The former senator cited concerns about poverty, unemployment, income levels and the rising cost of living, warning that citizens could experience greater hardship if the ruling party remains in power after 2027.

He described the current economic difficulties as an early indication of what Nigerians could face if the situation does not improve.

Melaye further criticised the National Assembly, arguing that the legislature should operate independently and provide effective oversight of the executive arm of government.

He called on opposition politicians across party lines to work together ahead of the election, urging political leaders to place national interests above personal ambitions and partisan differences.

Melaye also appealed to prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to consider cooperation as part of efforts to challenge the ruling party.

Emmanuel Fayose, a House of Representatives aspirant in Ekiti State, also criticised the Tinubu administration and urged Nigerians to assess political leaders based on their records and ability to address the country's challenges.

He alleged that the administration was concerned about Atiku's political influence and encouraged greater voter education and mobilisation, particularly among young Nigerians.

Fayose also expressed confidence that Atiku could attract considerable support in the South-West, a region expected to play an important role in the presidential contest.

The meeting comes as political parties and opposition groups intensify consultations and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general election.

Tinubu's re-election bid is expected to face scrutiny over economic conditions, security, governance and the impact of government policies on households and businesses.

The statements by the ADC figures reflect the opposition's effort to make economic hardship and accountability central issues in the coming campaign. The election outcome, however, will ultimately depend on voters and the conduct of the electoral process.
