Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed confidence that Nigerians will re-elect President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 general election, citing what he described as significant achievements by the administration.
Akpabio made the prediction on Monday when he received members of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, TETFund and NELFund, led by Senator Muntari Dandutse, at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The Senate President said the ruling All Progressives Congress has enough achievements to present to Nigerians when the party begins its campaign for the 2027 elections.
According to Akpabio, the Tinubu administration inherited a difficult economic situation but has implemented measures that he believes have improved the country’s financial position.
He claimed that when Tinubu assumed office, 27 states were unable to pay salaries and pensions, but argued that the situation had changed as a result of the President’s policies and economic reforms.
Akpabio subsequently declared that Nigerians would make their choice between the ruling party and its opponents when the 2027 election arrives.
He said Nigerians would “separate the chaff from the grains” and re-elect Tinubu for another term, expressing confidence that the APC would have a strong record to present to voters during the campaign.
The statement represents another strong endorsement of Tinubu’s re-election bid from a senior member of the President’s political establishment.
Akpabio also criticised opposition politicians challenging the administration, arguing that they had not presented Nigerians with convincing alternatives to the policies of the APC-led government.
The Senate President maintained that the 10th National Assembly had recorded what he described as significant achievements under his leadership and would continue working with the executive to deliver on its promises.
He also praised members of the Senate committee for continuing with their legislative responsibilities during the annual recess.
Akpabio advised lawmakers not to allow criticism on social media to distract them from their duties, dismissing much of the commentary on online platforms as unreliable.
He further urged senators who would not return to the National Assembly after the 2027 elections to remain committed to the APC and continue supporting the Tinubu administration.
Only about 51 serving senators have secured the APC’s tickets to contest the 2027 elections, meaning a significant number of current lawmakers will not return to the Senate after the elections.
Akpabio told the outgoing lawmakers that their loyalty to the party and the President would be appreciated, even if they were unsuccessful in securing another term in the National Assembly.
His comments come as Nigerian political parties and politicians increasingly turn their attention towards the 2027 general election.
Tinubu is seeking a second term in office, while opposition parties and political figures are positioning themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential contest.
Akpabio has previously been vocal in his support for Tinubu’s re-election and has urged political structures within the APC to intensify mobilisation ahead of the election.
In July, he also predicted that opposition parties would accuse the government of electoral manipulation if Tinubu wins the 2027 presidential election.
At the time, Akpabio urged supporters of the City Boy Movement to focus on voter mobilisation and ensuring that APC agents are present at polling units across the country.
The latest statement therefore adds to a series of public declarations by the Senate President projecting confidence in Tinubu’s chances of securing another four-year mandate.
However, the final outcome of the 2027 election will ultimately depend on voters and the electoral process, with Nigerians expected to assess the performance of the incumbent administration alongside the alternatives presented by opposition parties.
The economic situation is likely to remain a major factor in that assessment, particularly as citizens continue to contend with the effects of inflation, high living costs, fuel prices and other economic pressures.
The APC is expected to campaign heavily on the reforms and achievements of the Tinubu administration, while opposition parties are likely to focus on the impact of those policies on ordinary Nigerians.
With the election still ahead, Akpabio’s latest prediction signals the confidence within the ruling party as preparations for the 2027 political contest gather momentum.
For now, the Senate President remains convinced that the achievements of the Tinubu administration will be enough to persuade Nigerians to return the President to Aso Rock for another term.
