Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has called on northern presidential hopefuls to defer their ambitions until 2031. He said the presidency should remain in the South through 2027 to complete what he described as the current regional rotation.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has urged northern presidential aspirants to wait until 2031 before seeking the presidency, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete two consecutive terms before power returns to the North.

Yusuf made the statement on Sunday at the Kano Government House during the unveiling of 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor called for continued rotation of the presidency between the northern and southern regions, saying each region should have the opportunity to produce a president for two consecutive terms.

According to Yusuf, allowing an administration to complete two terms would provide sufficient time for the implementation of major policies and development programmes.

“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Yusuf said.

He further stated that northern political stakeholders should exercise patience, adding that after the South completes its two-term cycle, presidential power should return to the North in 2031.

Yusuf described rotational presidency as a means of promoting fairness, equity, national cohesion and a sense of belonging among Nigerians from different parts of the country.

The governor also appealed to politicians and political parties to focus their campaigns on issues, policies, programmes and development plans rather than personal attacks or rhetoric that could threaten peace and national unity.

His comments come amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across different regions and political platforms positioning themselves for the presidential contest.

The call also comes as debates over zoning and regional power rotation continue to feature prominently in discussions surrounding the 2027 presidency.

Yusuf urged political actors to place the peace, unity and development of Kano State and Nigeria above partisan differences as preparations for the next general election intensify.
