Minister of Works David Umahi has inaugurated a new infrastructure campaign team under the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council as the ruling party prepares to communicate the federal government’s projects ahead of the 2027 general election.

The team, known as the Office of the Deputy Director-General for Infrastructure, Mobilisation and Sensitisation, is expected to identify, document, compile and publicise infrastructure projects being executed by the Federal Government across the country.

Umahi, who serves as the council’s Deputy Director-General responsible for infrastructure, mobilisation and sensitisation, inaugurated the team during a meeting in Abuja on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

He said the initiative was designed to improve coordination and public awareness of federal infrastructure investments while ensuring that information about ongoing projects reached Nigerians across the six geopolitical zones.

Although the Federal Ministry of Works accounts for a substantial portion of the government’s infrastructure spending, Umahi said the team’s assignment should extend to projects undertaken by other ministries, departments and agencies.

The expanded coverage is intended to provide a broader picture of the administration’s infrastructure activities rather than focusing exclusively on roads and other projects under the Works Ministry.

According to the minister, members of the team must work together to identify relevant projects in their respective areas, gather accurate information and ensure that the details are effectively communicated to the public.

Senior Special Assistants to the President responsible for community engagement across the six geopolitical zones have been appointed as zonal coordinators for the exercise.

Umahi also directed other members of the office and its secretary to collaborate with the coordinators in gathering information about infrastructure developments within their assigned regions.

The team’s work is expected to cover projects at national, zonal and subnational levels where relevant federal infrastructure initiatives are being implemented.

The minister explained that existing publicity activities undertaken by the Ministry of Works and the presidential community-engagement officials would continue alongside the new arrangement.

However, the newly inaugurated office is expected to provide a wider coordination framework for collecting and presenting information about projects handled by different government agencies.

The development comes as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with infrastructure delivery likely to feature prominently in discussions about the performance of the incumbent administration.

The APC campaign council is expected to use documented information about federal projects as part of its communication and mobilisation activities ahead of the polls.

For the ruling party, the initiative offers a structured approach to presenting its infrastructure record to voters, while the accuracy and completeness of the information will be important to public assessment of the projects.

Umahi described infrastructure investment as an important contributor to economic growth, national development and stronger connections between communities.

He argued that roads and other infrastructure can support economic activities, improve access between locations and create opportunities for businesses and other sectors.

The minister also highlighted the Federal Government’s adoption of continuous reinforced concrete pavement technology, known as CRCP, in road construction.

He said the technology could reduce dependence on imported bitumen while encouraging the use of local resources and technical expertise in infrastructure delivery.

According to Umahi, wider use of locally available materials could support domestic economic activities and reduce demand for foreign exchange associated with imported road-construction materials.

He also presented the technology as an option for delivering more durable roads, although the long-term benefits will depend on project design, construction quality, maintenance and conditions at individual sites.

The minister urged members of the campaign office to approach their responsibilities with diligence and professionalism, stressing that information must be accurately compiled before being shared with the public.

Reliable project documentation will be important in distinguishing completed infrastructure from ongoing construction and proposed projects, particularly when information is used in political communication.

The initiative also places responsibility on the team to gather information across multiple agencies, each of which may have different project timelines, reporting systems and implementation challenges.

The government’s infrastructure record is likely to remain a subject of public debate as the election approaches, including questions about project completion, spending, quality and the benefits delivered to communities.

While the campaign team is intended to publicise federal projects, its inauguration does not in itself establish the performance or impact of those projects, which must be assessed using verifiable information.

The announcement marks another organisational step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 election, with infrastructure communication now assigned a dedicated role within the presidential campaign structure.

How effectively the team performs will depend on its ability to coordinate with government agencies, verify project details and communicate information in a way that allows Nigerians to understand the scope and progress of infrastructure investments nationwide.
