Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has died in a hotel room in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Uwuigbe reportedly died on October 5, 2026, after lodging at the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the lecturer later asked the woman to leave the room and buy water. Police said she returned and found Uwuigbe lying lifeless inside the room before raising the alarm.
The incident was subsequently reported to the authorities, leading to the arrest of three people as detectives began investigating what happened before the lecturer's death.
Those arrested are the hotel owner, the hotel manager and Jacob, the woman who was reportedly with Uwuigbe at the time.
Police have not disclosed the cause of death, and it remains unclear what caused the lecturer to collapse and die. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding his final moments as part of the ongoing investigation.
Uwuigbe's remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary in Ekpoma.
The development has also prompted clarification from Ambrose Alli University. The institution confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises.
AAU also clarified that the woman involved in the incident was not a student of the university.
The police investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the lecturer's death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
Until the investigation is concluded or an official medical finding is released, the exact cause of Uwuigbe's death remains unknown. The allegations surrounding the incident should therefore be treated cautiously as authorities continue their inquiry.
