Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027, pledging to mobilize Adamawa State for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The declaration has attracted political attention because his father, Atiku Abubakar, is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and is expected to challenge Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Abba made the announcement on Friday, October 30, 2026, at the APC national secretariat in Abuja during the unveiling of the Haske Bola Tinubu Organization (HBTO), a political support group he founded.
The event also featured the launch of the organization's subsidized public transportation initiative, which is part of its planned activities ahead of the next presidential election.
Speaking during the event, Abba expressed confidence in his organization's ability to secure substantial support for Tinubu in Adamawa, his father's home state.
When asked whether he could deliver the state for the President, he responded emphatically: "Yes, yes, yes. We are going to deliver Adamawa State."
Addressing the political implications of his decision, Abba maintained that his support for Tinubu was based on personal conviction rather than an attempt to oppose his father's political ambitions.
He acknowledged that his decision could attract public attention because of his relationship with the former Vice-President.
However, he argued that political choices should be guided by individual judgment and the freedom to support leaders and political parties that align with one's beliefs.
According to him, democracy becomes stronger when individuals are allowed to make independent political decisions, even when their choices differ from those of family members.
He described the establishment of HBTO as a deliberate political decision informed by his confidence in the direction of the Tinubu administration.
Abba also dismissed suggestions that supporting the President amounted to antagonizing his father.
"I've always supported my father since I started acting in politics, and I supported him because of what he has done for the country," he said.
"But I believe that whenever a government comes out with policies that will help the people, I will join them."
He added that his decision was based on his assessment of the government's policies and ongoing reforms.
"It's not just because it's my father. I don't think I am antagonizing him; I simply believe in the current government's policies and the reforms taking place," he stated.
The APC supporter also expressed confidence in the policies introduced by the Tinubu administration, highlighting several programs he believes could improve the lives of Nigerians.
Among the initiatives he mentioned were the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), infrastructure investments, increased statutory allocations to state governments and transportation support programs.
He maintained that these interventions influenced his decision to support the President's second-term ambition.
According to him, political support should be determined by the policies and performance of a government rather than family relationships or personal associations.
His comments come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the unveiling, Abba announced that HBTO would initially provide 10 luxury buses to operate subsidized transportation services, beginning in the Federal Capital Territory.
He explained that the initiative was designed to reduce transportation costs, ease commuting difficulties and provide practical assistance to ordinary Nigerians.
The organization also plans to expand the transportation programmed to other parts of the country.
"Every state will have five or six buses as we expand," he said.
The group further announced plans to organize a two-million-man mobilization march across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, beginning in Abuja.
Abba also disclosed that HBTO was working with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to mobilize political support for Tinubu in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
He said structures were already being activated in Rivers ahead of planned political mobilization activities.
Atiku Abubakar remains one of Nigeria's prominent opposition politicians, having contested the presidency several times, including under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 and 2023.
His emergence as the ADC's presidential candidate for the 2027 election places him on a competing political platform with President Tinubu.
Abba's decision to support the APC therefore introduces an interesting family dimension to the approaching presidential contest.
The younger Abubakar had previously supported his father's political ambitions, including the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections.
He formally joined the APC in January 2026, declaring his intention to work towards Tinubu's re-election.
Atiku, however, previously indicated that his children's political decisions were personal choices that he would not interfere with.
Abba's declaration could attract considerable attention in Adamawa, a state with significant political importance in the North-East geopolitical zone.
The state has traditionally been an important political base for Atiku, making the younger Abubakar's promise to mobilize support for Tinubu particularly significant.
However, winning an election requires more than influential political endorsements. Grassroots mobilization, party structures, voter confidence and the performance of political candidates will all play important roles.
For the APC, securing stronger support in Adamawa could strengthen its position in the North-East ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
For the ADC, the development presents an additional political talking point as Atiku prepares for another presidential contest.
With HBTO announcing plans for nationwide mobilization, subsidized transportation and a two-million-man march, attention will turn to how effectively the organization translates its promises into grassroots political support.
Abba has made his position clear: he intends to work for Tinubu's victory, including in Adamawa.
Although his political choice differs from his father's presidential ambition, he insists that it should not be interpreted as a rejection of their family relationship.
The coming months will reveal whether his mobilization efforts can deliver the electoral support he has promised the APC in 2027.
