Maiduguri, Borno State, The headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, has issued a fresh security alert ahead of the Eid-El Kabir celebrations, warning residents to remain vigilant over possible attacks allegedly being planned by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.
The warning comes as Muslims across Nigeria prepare to celebrate the Eid-El Kabir festival on Wednesday, a period that traditionally witnesses increased movement of people, gatherings, and commercial activities across the country.
In a security advisory released on Monday, the theatre command assured residents of the North-East that adequate security measures had been put in place to prevent any breakdown of law and order during the festive period.
According to the military, troops have already been strategically deployed across vulnerable and high-risk locations within the North-East theatre of operations to ensure peaceful celebrations.
The command noted that intelligence reports indicated that terrorist elements may attempt to launch coordinated attacks, including bombings and assaults on soft targets, during the Sallah festivities.
Security agencies have therefore urged residents to remain alert and immediately report suspicious movements, unattended items, or unusual activities to the nearest security personnel.
The North-East region, particularly Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, has remained a major hotspot for insurgency activities over the years, despite repeated military offensives against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Military authorities stressed that proactive measures are being intensified to deny terrorists the opportunity to disrupt the celebrations.
Residents were also advised to avoid crowded and unsecured areas where possible and cooperate fully with security checkpoints and patrol teams deployed across major roads, worship centres, markets, motor parks, and event venues.
The military reassured citizens that Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout the festive season.
“The public is encouraged to continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence that could help prevent attacks and protect communities,” the advisory stated.
The warning has triggered concerns among residents in parts of the North-East, many of whom still remember previous attacks carried out during festive periods by insurgent groups targeting civilians and public spaces.
Over the years, Boko Haram and ISWAP have used improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide bombings, and coordinated raids to instill fear and destabilize communities in the region.
However, security analysts believe the increased military presence and intelligence-driven operations may help reduce the risk of major attacks during this year’s Eid celebrations.
Nigeria’s security forces have continued to intensify counter-terrorism operations in recent months, recording several offensives against insurgent hideouts and logistics networks in the Lake Chad region and Sambisa Forest.
Despite these gains, experts warn that sleeper cells and isolated terrorist units still pose threats, especially during high-profile religious and public events.
Why It Matters
The latest warning highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Nigeria’s North-East despite years of counter-insurgency operations.
Eid-El Kabir is one of the biggest religious celebrations in the country, attracting large crowds to mosques, markets, and recreational centres. Any successful attack could result in significant casualties and heightened fear among residents.
The advisory also underscores the importance of community vigilance and intelligence sharing in combating terrorism and maintaining public safety during major national celebrations.
Impact and Outlook
As Nigerians prepare for the Sallah festivities, security agencies are expected to maintain heightened surveillance and patrols across strategic locations in the North-East.
Residents have been urged to celebrate responsibly, remain security conscious, and cooperate with authorities to ensure a peaceful and incident-free Eid-El Kabir celebration across the region.
