Cooking Gas Prices Set for Major Reduction as LPG Landing Costs Decline

Nigerians may soon experience significant relief in household energy costs following a sharp decline in the landing cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas.

According to the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), the landing cost of LPG has dropped to N950,000 per metric tonne, a development that is expected to translate into lower retail prices across the country. Based on the latest market figures, the expected retail price of cooking gas could fall to around N925 per kilogramme if marketers pass on the cost savings to consumers.

The development comes at a time when many households are struggling with rising living expenses, making any reduction in energy costs a welcome relief. Industry analysts believe the decline in LPG prices is largely driven by improved market conditions and a reduction in international product costs.

The anticipated drop in cooking gas prices follows a broader trend in the downstream petroleum sector, where petroleum marketers have reportedly increased fuel importation to strengthen supply and take advantage of declining global market prices.

A recent report indicated that petroleum marketers imported fuel cargoes valued at approximately N279 billion. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate product availability across the country while benefiting from more favorable international pricing conditions.

Market observers say the increased import activity could help stabilize fuel supply and potentially reduce pressure on retail fuel prices in the coming weeks. With global crude oil and refined product prices experiencing fluctuations, marketers appear to be positioning themselves to secure products at more competitive rates.

For consumers, the decline in LPG landing costs could be particularly impactful. Cooking gas remains one of the most widely used energy sources for households and small businesses across Nigeria. Lower prices could help ease financial pressure on families that have faced repeated increases in cooking gas costs over the past few years.

Energy experts have also noted that more affordable LPG prices could encourage greater adoption of cleaner cooking energy, supporting efforts to reduce dependence on firewood and other traditional fuels that pose environmental and health risks.

While consumers remain hopeful, industry stakeholders stress that the final retail price will depend on several factors, including transportation costs, distribution expenses, exchange rate movements, and marketers' pricing strategies.

Nevertheless, the latest figures have sparked optimism that Nigerians could soon benefit from lower cooking gas prices, offering much-needed relief amid ongoing economic challenges and rising costs of living.
