A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed June 30, 2026, for ruling on an application filed by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore seeking the restoration of his bail and the nullification of a bench warrant previously issued against him.
The court announced the date after hearing arguments from legal representatives involved in the matter, bringing renewed attention to a case that has continued to attract public interest and debate across Nigeria.
Sowore, a prominent activist and publisher, is asking the court to restore the bail conditions earlier granted to him and set aside the bench warrant issued following allegations that he failed to comply with certain court directives. His legal team argues that the warrant should be revoked and that he remains entitled to the constitutional protections available to every defendant facing criminal proceedings.
During proceedings, counsel for the activist urged the court to consider the circumstances surrounding the case and grant the application in the interest of justice. According to the defence team, restoring Sowore’s bail would allow him to continue preparing his defence while respecting the legal process.
The prosecution, however, opposed the application and urged the court to uphold previous decisions relating to the matter. Government lawyers argued that the court should carefully evaluate the facts presented before making a determination on the request.
Justice presiding over the case subsequently reserved ruling and fixed June 30 for the delivery of a decision that could significantly influence the next phase of the legal proceedings.
The case has generated considerable public attention due to Sowore’s status as one of Nigeria’s most outspoken activists and political figures. Over the years, he has been involved in several high-profile legal battles stemming from his activism, public demonstrations, and criticism of government policies.
Supporters of the activist have continued to call for what they describe as a fair and transparent judicial process, while others maintain that all parties must allow the courts to determine the issues based on the law and evidence presented.
Legal analysts note that the outcome of the June 30 ruling could determine whether Sowore regains his bail status and whether the court considers the bench warrant valid. The decision may also shape subsequent proceedings in the broader case.
As Nigerians await the court’s ruling, attention remains focused on the Federal High Court, where the next chapter of the legal dispute is expected to unfold.
The June 30 decision is anticipated to provide clarity on Sowore’s legal standing and the direction of the ongoing proceedings.
