Covenant University, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos have jointly emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranked universities in the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The three Nigerian institutions were placed in the 801–1000 global band in the latest edition of the rankings published by Times Higher Education on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Nigeria recorded 29 ranked universities in the 2027 edition, representing an increase from the 24 institutions featured in the 2026 rankings.

Five institutions — Osun State University, the University of Maiduguri, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Kwara State University and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike — were newly ranked this year.

Covenant University returned to the highest Nigerian position after being placed third in the previous edition, when the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos shared the top Nigerian position.

The three universities now share the 801–1000 band globally, meaning the ranking places them within the same broad international range rather than assigning them separate positions inside that band.

Ahmadu Bello University and Bayero University followed in the Nigerian list, occupying the 1001–1200 global band alongside Landmark University and the University of Ilorin.

Babcock University, Osun State University and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka were placed in the 1201–1400 band.

The Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Benin, University of Jos and University of Maiduguri were ranked between 1401 and 1600 globally.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure was placed in the 1601–1800 band, while the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Lagos State University, Olabisi Onabanjo University and University of Calabar occupied the 1801–2000 band.

Delta State University, Ekiti State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Kwara State University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and the University of Port Harcourt were placed in the 2001-and-above category.

Times Higher Education said its 2027 World University Rankings cover 2,297 institutions across 118 countries and territories, making it a broad international assessment of research-intensive universities.

The ranking evaluates universities across five major areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.

These areas are assessed through 17 performance indicators designed to measure different aspects of institutional performance and global engagement.

Among the Nigerian institutions, the University of Lagos recorded the highest score for research quality, with 67.8 points in that component of the ranking.

Bayero University was identified as Nigeria’s strongest performer in international outlook, while Covenant University recorded the highest industry score among Nigerian institutions, reflecting its performance in the ranking’s industry-related measure.

The 2027 edition also showed broader growth in the number of African institutions included, with 69 universities from sub-Saharan Africa ranked compared with 55 in the previous edition.

The University of Cape Town remained the highest-ranked institution in sub-Saharan Africa, rising to joint 147th globally from joint 164th in the previous edition.

Globally, the University of Oxford retained the number one position for an 11th consecutive year according to the Times Higher Education ranking.

Beyond the 29 ranked universities, another 33 Nigerian institutions were listed as “reporter” institutions after submitting data but not meeting the eligibility requirements for a numerical ranking.

Times Higher Education explained that eligible universities must teach undergraduates, conduct research across a range of subjects and have produced at least 1,000 research publications between 2021 and 2025, with a minimum of 100 publications in each year.

The expanded Nigerian representation in the 2027 ranking provides a wider picture of the country’s participation in global higher education assessments, while the individual bands show the different positions occupied by institutions across the international table.

The latest ranking therefore places three Nigerian universities within the same 801–1000 global band and brings the total number of ranked Nigerian institutions to 29.
