Davido Announces Exit From Nigerian Politics After Adeleke’s Re-Election
Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has announced his decision to distance himself from Nigerian politics following the re-election of his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, as Governor of Osun State.
The singer expressed frustration with the political environment in a strongly worded statement shared after the election, saying he had done his part in supporting his family but no longer wanted to be involved in politics.
Davido accused those around the political process of being “ruthless” and “disgusting”, while making it clear that he believed he had fulfilled his responsibility in supporting his uncle's re-election campaign.
“I brought no one! No one defended me! I backed my family on my own!!” the singer said, expressing his disappointment over what he described as his experience during the political process.
He added that he had “done my job” and described Nigerian politics as “evil”, before announcing that he wanted to distance himself from the political space.
The statement comes shortly after Ademola Adeleke secured another term as governor of Osun State, extending the Adeleke family's political influence in the state.
Davido had openly supported his uncle during the election campaign and participated in efforts to mobilise young voters ahead of the poll. His involvement attracted significant attention because of his huge following among Nigerian youths and his status as one of Africa's most internationally recognised entertainers.
The singer had previously urged voters to reject violence and participate peacefully in the election, while expressing confidence in Adeleke's performance as governor.
His latest comments, however, suggest that his experience during the political process may have changed his willingness to remain publicly involved in Nigerian politics.
Davido's decision could generate considerable discussion given the growing involvement of Nigerian entertainers and celebrities in political campaigns.
In recent years, several musicians and public figures have used their platforms to encourage voter participation, support candidates and speak on governance issues.
The singer's comments also highlight the difficult relationship celebrities can face when they become directly involved in political campaigns, particularly when family interests, public expectations and political rivalries intersect.
Despite announcing his intention to step away, Davido did not indicate that he would completely stop speaking on issues affecting Nigeria. His statement instead appeared focused on distancing himself from active political participation.
For now, attention remains on how the singer will approach political issues going forward and whether his decision will affect his public involvement in future elections.
Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke's re-election marks another chapter in Osun State politics, while Davido's remarks have added a fresh layer of public interest to the aftermath of the election.
