A Nigerian doctor has clarified the role of palliative care in advanced cancer treatment following emotional appeals from the daughters of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who said hospitals had refused to continue treating their father.
Ogogo's daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, recently appealed to the public and medical professionals for assistance after revealing that the actor is battling stage-four cancer. Their comments generated widespread concern among fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry. Reacting to the development, medical doctor Olusina Ajidahun explained that a decision to move a patient with advanced cancer to palliative care should not necessarily be interpreted as hospitals abandoning the patient.
According to the doctor, palliative care becomes an important part of managing some patients with advanced or terminal illnesses, particularly when curative treatments such as chemotherapy and other therapies have been exhausted or are no longer considered beneficial. Palliative care focuses on managing symptoms, reducing suffering and improving a patient's quality of life rather than attempting to cure the underlying disease.
Ajidahun cautioned that describing such a transition simply as hospitals “refusing to treat” a patient could create misunderstanding about the medical team's decisions and potentially fuel anger against healthcare workers.
The clarification comes as Ogogo's family continues to seek medical guidance for the actor. His daughter Kira has also explained that travelling abroad for treatment may be difficult because of his fragile health condition, despite having a valid visa.
The situation has prompted several Nollywood personalities to rally support for the veteran actor. Actor Femi Adebayo, among others, has called for medical professionals and specialists to help the family identify appropriate treatment options.
The discussion has also highlighted the importance of understanding stage-four cancer and palliative care, particularly when families are faced with difficult medical decisions.
Palliative care does not necessarily mean that a patient receives no medical attention. Instead, it can involve treatment and support aimed at controlling pain and other symptoms, addressing emotional needs and helping patients maintain the best possible quality of life.
For families dealing with advanced cancer, doctors generally assess the patient's condition, previous treatments and available options before determining the most appropriate course of care. In Ogogo's case, the public does not have access to his complete medical records, meaning specific treatment decisions can only be properly assessed by his medical team.
