Ola Olukoyede has raised serious concerns over the growing rate of cybercrime among university students in Nigeria, warning that the problem is becoming a major national challenge.

Speaking during the opening of the 8th Biennial Conference of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities in Nigeria (COPSUN) in Kano, the EFCC chairman said a significant number of students in tertiary institutions are allegedly involved in internet fraud and other cyber-related crimes.

Olukoyede described the situation as a crisis that is gradually becoming normalized within parts of the country’s youth population, especially among students seeking quick financial gains through illegal online activities.

According to him, the increasing involvement of undergraduates in cybercrime poses a serious threat to the future of education, national values, and Nigeria’s global reputation.

The anti-corruption chief called on universities, parents, religious leaders, and government institutions to work together in addressing the trend through stronger moral guidance, digital ethics education, and stricter enforcement measures.

He also stressed the need to create more legitimate economic opportunities for young people, noting that unemployment and the pressure to attain wealth quickly are contributing factors behind the rise in internet fraud.

The remarks have sparked fresh conversations about cybercrime culture among Nigerian youths and the growing influence of social media lifestyles that often glorify sudden wealth.
