The Ekiti State Government has urged residents to prioritise their safety during heavy rainfall, following renewed concerns over flooding and other hazards associated with torrential downpours across parts of the state.
The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, issued the warning as heavy rains continue to create dangerous conditions in parts of Ekiti, particularly areas prone to flooding.
The commissioner called on residents to avoid taking unnecessary risks during heavy rainfall and to remain alert to changing weather conditions.
The warning comes shortly after heavy rainfall caused flooding in several parts of Ado-Ekiti, with reports of fast-moving floodwater affecting roads and communities. Some areas, including Aayemi Garage, Elemi, Ureje, Odo-Ado, Faglo, Polytechnic Road and New Iyin Road, were reported to have experienced serious flooding.
Reports from the affected areas also indicated that three people were reportedly swept away by the floodwater, while emergency responders and community members were involved in efforts to locate those missing.
The development has heightened concerns about the dangers of attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges and waterways during heavy downpours.
The state government has previously warned residents against driving or trekking through floodwaters, stressing that sudden flooding can become life-threatening within a short period. Authorities have also advised residents to remain in safe locations rather than attempting to travel through flooded routes.
Aluko-Ajisafe has also been involved in the state's broader environmental and flood-prevention efforts. The government has carried out dredging and desilting of waterways and drainage channels in areas considered susceptible to flooding, while residents have repeatedly been urged to avoid dumping refuse into drains and waterways.
The commissioner has previously warned that improper waste disposal and the discharge of wastewater into public drainage channels can create environmental and public-health risks. The state government has also stepped up enforcement against environmental violations.
As heavy rainfall continues, residents in flood-prone communities are advised to avoid crossing fast-moving water, stay away from dangerous bridges and waterways, and move to safer or higher ground when necessary.
The latest warning reinforces the need for residents to take flood risks seriously and follow safety instructions from relevant authorities whenever severe weather occurs.
