The Ekiti State Police Command has announced a statewide restriction on vehicular movement ahead of the Ekiti State Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

According to the command, the movement restriction will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. across all 16 local government areas of the state. The measure is part of comprehensive security arrangements aimed at ensuring a peaceful, free, fair, and credible electoral process.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, residents were advised to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security agencies deployed for election duties. The command emphasized that only essential service providers, election officials accredited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), medical personnel, and other authorized individuals would be permitted to move during the restricted period.

The police also announced a strict ban on the use of VIP escorts, security convoys, and unauthorized armed personnel throughout the election period. Political office holders, government officials, and other influential individuals were directed not to move with security details to polling units or collation centers unless specifically authorized by the relevant authorities.

According to the command, the restrictions are intended to prevent voter intimidation, maintain public order, and create a secure environment for voters to exercise their civic rights without fear or interference.

Security agencies, including the police, military, civil defence corps, and other relevant organizations, have reportedly finalized plans to deploy personnel across strategic locations in the state. Special attention will be given to polling units, collation centers, major roads, and other critical infrastructure to prevent any breach of peace.

Residents have also been warned against engaging in activities capable of disrupting the electoral process, including vote-buying, ballot snatching, political violence, and the spread of misinformation. The police assured citizens that anyone found violating electoral laws would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Ekiti governorship election is expected to attract significant political attention as voters head to the polls to elect a new leader for the state. Stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, observers, and civil society organizations, have continued to call for a peaceful and transparent election.

The Ekiti State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property throughout the election period and urged residents to remain law-abiding while reporting suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

As the state prepares for the crucial governorship poll, authorities are optimistic that the security measures put in place will contribute to a smooth, peaceful, and credible electoral exercise.
