Residents across Ekiti State and across the diaspora are rolling out the drums to celebrate a major historical milestone as the state officially marks its 30th anniversary since creation.
Affectionately known as the "Land of Honour" (Ile Iyi, Ile Eye), Ekiti State was officially carved out of the old Ondo State on October 1, 1996, during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha. Three decades later, the state stands as a proud testament to community resilience, cultural rich heritage, and relentless pursuit of progress.
From the lush green hills of Ado-Ekiti to the iconic flowing waters of the Ikogosi Warm Springs, messages of joy, goodwill, and reflection have poured in from citizens, political leaders, traditional rulers, and cultural organizations across the country.
Reflecting on the three-decade milestone, community leaders have highlighted Ekiti’s unmatched reputation as the fountain of knowledge in Nigeria, producing top-tier scholars, judicial icons, public servants, and industry pioneers who continue to make significant contributions globally.
"From our green valleys to our flowing streams, Ekiti at 30 stands as a proud story of resilience, beauty, and unwavering character," remarked one prominent community representative during anniversary gatherings in Ado-Ekiti. "Celebrating three decades of our beloved state comes with deep gratitude for how far we have traveled together, and immensely high hopes for the chapter ahead."
Over the past 30 years, successive administrations have worked to build critical infrastructure, modernize urban hubs, boost agricultural output, and expand educational opportunities across all sixteen local government areas.
As anniversary festivities kick off across the state—ranging from civic parades and cultural showcases to special interfaith thanksgiving services—citizens continue to call for renewed unity and strategic development. The milestone serves not only as a moment to honor the visionaries who championed the state's creation, but also as a rallying call to build an even stronger, more prosperous future for generations to come.
