Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has appeared before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on fresh charges, marking another significant chapter in the growing legal proceedings involving the former governor.

The arraignment took place on Wednesday as prosecutors brought an amended 11-count charge against El-Rufai, his former Special Adviser Jimi Lawal, and several corporate entities linked to the case.

According to court documents, the charges revolve around allegations of abuse of office, corruption, financial impropriety, and related offences allegedly committed during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor of Kaduna State.

During the proceedings, El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to the count brought directly against him, while his co-defendant Jimi Lawal also entered not guilty pleas to the charges filed against him.

One of the corporate defendants, Singularity Network Security Limited, was also arraigned on multiple counts contained in the amended charge.

The prosecution informed the court that the charges stem from investigations into alleged misconduct and financial transactions carried out during the previous administration in Kaduna State.

Legal representatives for El-Rufai and Lawal subsequently notified the court that separate bail applications had already been filed on behalf of their clients.

Following arguments from both the prosecution and defence teams, Justice Hauwa’u Buhari adjourned the matter until July 1, 2026, when the court is expected to deliver a ruling on the bail applications.

Although journalists reportedly had limited access to parts of the proceedings, sources familiar with the hearing indicated that both sides vigorously defended their positions before the court reserved its decision.

The latest arraignment comes amid a series of legal challenges confronting the former governor in different courts.

Shortly after the Federal High Court proceedings, El-Rufai also appeared before the Kaduna State High Court for the continuation of another case instituted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

That separate matter involves allegations relating to abuse of office and money laundering allegedly committed during his years in office.

Justice Darius Khobo, who is handling the Kaduna State High Court case, subsequently adjourned proceedings until June 29 for further hearing.

The legal proceedings have attracted nationwide attention because of El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigerian politics and his role in national policy discussions over the years.

As governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023, El-Rufai implemented several reforms in areas including education, infrastructure, public service restructuring, and investment promotion.

His administration also faced criticism from political opponents and civil society groups over various policy decisions and governance approaches during that period.

Since leaving office, the former governor has remained an influential political figure and a regular commentator on national affairs.

The ongoing court cases have therefore generated significant interest among supporters, critics, and political observers across the country.

Legal analysts note that the outcome of the proceedings could have implications for accountability debates and anti-corruption efforts within Nigeria’s political system.

They also argue that the cases may further shape public discussions surrounding governance standards and public office conduct.

The prosecution maintains that sufficient evidence exists to justify the charges and subsequent legal proceedings.

Defence lawyers, however, insist that their clients are innocent and intend to vigorously challenge the allegations before the courts.

The not guilty pleas entered by El-Rufai and his co-defendants mean that the cases will proceed through the full judicial process unless otherwise resolved through legal mechanisms available under Nigerian law.

Observers expect intense legal arguments in the coming weeks as both sides prepare for the next stages of the proceedings.

Attention is particularly focused on the upcoming July 1 ruling, which will determine whether El-Rufai and his co-defendants will be granted bail under the terms requested by their legal teams.

For now, the fresh arraignment adds another layer to the legal challenges facing the former governor and ensures that his court battles will remain a major subject of national political discussion.
