Nigeria’s Falconets have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England’s Young Lionesses 3-0 in a dominant Round of 16 encounter in Poland on Thursday.
The Nigerian side produced a confident and disciplined performance, with goals from Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu sealing a convincing victory for the Falconets.
Nigeria took control early in the match and opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Rafiu produced a brilliant individual effort, beating her marker before firing the ball beyond England goalkeeper Katie Cox to give the Falconets an early advantage. England responded strongly and pushed for an equaliser, creating several opportunities before the break. However, Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma stood firm to keep her side ahead.
Uzoma delivered one of the biggest moments of the match when she saved Rachel Maltby’s penalty after England were awarded a spot kick following a VAR review. The Nigerian goalkeeper got a hand to the effort and helped keep the Falconets’ lead intact going into half-time. Nigeria returned for the second half with the same attacking intent and quickly extended their advantage.
Just two minutes after the restart, Akekoromowei doubled Nigeria’s lead with a well-taken left-footed finish, putting the Falconets firmly in control of the contest.
England struggled to find a way back into the game as Nigeria continued to threaten on the counterattack. The Falconets eventually added a third goal in the 73rd minute when Mary Mamudu finished a well-worked move to make it 3-0 and effectively put the result beyond England.
The victory marks another impressive step for Nigeria at the tournament after a difficult start to their group campaign. The Falconets lost 2-0 to Spain in their opening game and played out a goalless draw against China before responding with a remarkable 10-1 victory over New Caledonia.
Nigeria will now face Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20, with the Falconets continuing their pursuit of a first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
The Nigerian team have previously finished runners-up at the competition and will hope their impressive knockout-stage performance can take them another step closer to making history in Poland.
