The Federal Government has issued a formal clarification regarding the correct official title and appellation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following what it described as repeated public and media errors.

The clarification was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), which expressed concern over the growing number of incorrect references to the President in publications and official communications.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the government urged media organisations, institutions, and members of the public to verify official titles before publication to avoid what it described as embarrassing and avoidable mistakes.

According to the statement, the correct and official appellation of the Nigerian leader is:

“His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The OSGF said the clarification became necessary after an error was reportedly observed in a national newspaper publication circulated on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.

Government officials stressed that such inaccuracies can easily be avoided through proper verification using official government communication channels.

The SGF’s office also advised journalists and organisations to rely on official government platforms whenever clarification is required regarding presidential titles, appointments, or government communications.

Political observers say the development highlights the increasing sensitivity around official government branding and presidential communication within Nigeria’s political environment.

Analysts also note that official titles and constitutional appellations often carry legal, diplomatic, and ceremonial significance in state communications and international engagements.

The clarification comes amid heightened political attention surrounding President Tinubu as conversations around governance, reforms, and the 2027 elections continue to dominate national discourse.

Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, currently holds the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), traditionally reserved for Nigerian presidents.

The title “Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces” is also constitutionally attached to the office of the President under Nigeria’s democratic structure.

Observers say the government’s decision to publicly issue the correction reflects efforts to standardise official references across media reports, institutions, and public documents.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation remains one of the central coordinating institutions within Nigeria’s executive branch, responsible for supervising policy coordination and official government communication.

Although the clarification appears administrative, the issue quickly generated reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the importance of protocol, presidential branding, and media accuracy in official reporting.

Some supporters defended the government’s position, arguing that accurate representation of official titles remains important in maintaining institutional order and diplomatic standards.

Others, however, questioned whether the clarification required a national public statement given the country’s broader economic and governance challenges.

Despite the mixed reactions, the Federal Government insists that proper verification and professionalism remain necessary in all official communications involving the presidency.
