The Federal Government has unveiled FreeTV, a new digital broadcasting platform designed to provide Nigerians with free access to television content on mobile phones and other digital devices.

The initiative forms part of Nigeria’s renewed Digital Switch Over programme aimed at completing the country’s long-delayed transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting.

Officials said the platform is built to expand access to television services while improving broadcasting quality and audience reach nationwide.

Unlike previous digital television models, FreeTV will allow viewers to watch content through mobile applications, smart devices, and satellite-enabled platforms without relying solely on traditional television sets.

The National Broadcasting Commission said the platform is expected to launch with more than 100 television channels covering news, sports, entertainment, education, culture, and children's programming.

Authorities noted that the channels will include content produced in multiple Nigerian languages to improve accessibility and cultural representation.

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris described the initiative as a major milestone in Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.

According to the minister, the new system will provide clearer television signals and significantly improve the viewing experience for millions of Nigerians.

The government also believes the platform will create new opportunities for broadcasters, advertisers, and content creators operating within the country's media industry.

Officials explained that FreeTV has been designed as a true free-to-air service that removes many of the cost barriers associated with previous digital television initiatives.

The platform will leverage infrastructure provided by the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited to ensure nationwide coverage and wider content distribution.

Government representatives said the project will also support the growth of local content production by creating a larger distribution network for Nigerian programmes.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that digital broadcasting can improve audience measurement and advertising efficiency.

The NBC disclosed that the platform incorporates modern audience analytics tools capable of providing broadcasters with more accurate viewership data.

Experts believe this capability could transform how advertising investments are allocated within Nigeria’s media industry.

The government estimates that the digital switch-over programme could unlock substantial economic opportunities across the broadcasting ecosystem.

According to projections released by officials, the initiative could generate significant advertising revenue while expanding opportunities for local content creators.

The platform is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader digital economy ambitions by encouraging technological innovation and media sector growth.

Officials further revealed plans to strengthen the supporting infrastructure through the deployment of additional satellite capacity in the coming years.

The nationwide rollout is being coordinated through collaboration between the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the National Broadcasting Commission, and NIGCOMSAT.

As Nigeria accelerates its digital transformation agenda, the launch of FreeTV is being viewed as a major step toward making television content more accessible, affordable, and available on the devices Nigerians use most every day.
