The Federal Government has announced that millions of Nigerians will soon gain access to more than 100 free television channels without the need to purchase new or special decoders as the country intensifies preparations for the full implementation of its Digital Switchover (DSO) programme.
The disclosure was made as authorities renewed efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s transition from analogue broadcasting to digital television broadcasting nationwide.
According to the government, Nigerians who already own compatible digital television sets or approved set-top boxes will be able to access multiple free-to-air channels once the rollout expands fully across the country. Officials explained that viewers will not necessarily need to buy entirely new decoders if their current devices support digital broadcasting standards.
The Digital Switchover programme is a nationwide broadcasting transition initiative designed to replace analogue television transmission with digital technology, improving picture quality, audio clarity, channel availability, and broadcasting efficiency.
Government officials noted that the migration will significantly increase the number of television channels available to households while also reducing signal interference and improving viewing experience.
Under the new digital broadcasting system, viewers are expected to receive access to entertainment, sports, movies, education, children’s programming, music, lifestyle, and news channels at no additional monthly subscription cost for free-to-air services.
Industry stakeholders say the programme could transform television access in Nigeria, especially for low-income households that rely heavily on free broadcasting services.
The government also explained that the Digital Switchover initiative would create opportunities for local content producers, broadcasters, filmmakers, and technology companies by expanding the country’s digital media ecosystem.
Officials added that the project is expected to generate employment opportunities across broadcasting, electronics installation, content production, signal distribution, and digital infrastructure management.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), alongside other stakeholders in the broadcasting sector, has continued sensitisation campaigns to help Nigerians understand how the transition will work and what devices are required for compatibility.
According to officials, households with digital-ready television sets may only need to perform channel rescans once services become fully active in their areas. However, homes using older analogue television sets may still require approved digital set-top boxes to access the new channels.
The government said the rollout would continue gradually across different states as infrastructure deployment expands nationwide.
Technology experts have described the development as an important step toward modernising Nigeria’s broadcasting sector and aligning the country with global digital broadcasting standards already adopted in several countries.
The Digital Switchover programme has faced multiple delays over the years due to funding, infrastructure, and implementation challenges, but authorities say renewed efforts are now underway to accelerate nationwide adoption.
For many Nigerians, the initiative could provide wider access to information, educational content, and entertainment without the high costs associated with subscription television services.
More details regarding rollout dates, supported devices, and regional activation schedules are expected to be announced by the Federal Government and broadcasting authorities in the coming months.
