The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has strongly defended its security and visitation procedures following allegations by one of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s wives that she was denied access to deliver food to her husband while he remains in custody.
The anti-graft agency insisted that no individual, regardless of political status or public profile, is exempt from its established access control protocols.
The controversy erupted after a viral Hausa-language video circulated online in which El-
Rufai’s wife accused ICPC officials of preventing her from entering the commission’s Abuja headquarters around 7pm to deliver food to the former governor.
She also alleged that the agency violated a court order allowing family access and claimed that El-Rufai was being denied adequate welfare while in detention.
Responding during a media briefing in Abuja, ICPC spokesperson and Head of Media and Public Communications, John Odey, described the allegations as “false and misleading.”
According to him, the commission’s visitation policy permits access between 9am and 6:30pm and applies uniformly to all visitors without exception.
Odey explained that El-Rufai’s wife allegedly arrived after official visiting hours had ended, thereby breaching standard access procedures already known to the family.
He stressed that the protocol predates the current leadership of the commission and exists primarily for security, accountability, and operational order.
The ICPC further stated that members of El-Rufai’s family had already visited multiple times earlier that same day to deliver meals.
According to the commission, visitor records showed that one of the former governor’s wives and a housemaid were granted entry several times between approximately 10:30am and 5:30pm.
Officials argued that these documented visits directly contradicted claims that El-Rufai was being denied food or family access.
The commission even displayed portions of its visitor register during the media briefing to support its position.
The agency also rejected claims that El-Rufai’s medical team had been denied access.
According to ICPC officials, a visitor claiming to be part of the former governor’s medical personnel arrived without prior authorization or adequate identification, prompting security verification procedures.
Odey stated that El-Rufai had previously been granted permission to visit his dentist and eye specialist under official escort after formal requests were submitted and approved.
The commission added that its in-house medical personnel also remain available whenever required.
Describing El-Rufai as a “high-profile politically exposed person,” the ICPC maintained that heightened security measures are necessary for both his safety and the protection of other individuals within custody facilities.
The commission additionally dismissed allegations that the former governor’s detention is politically motivated.
According to Odey, the matter remains strictly judicial and procedural, insisting that the ICPC “does not play politics.”
The ICPC clarified that El-Rufai remains in custody because he has not yet fulfilled his bail conditions despite being granted bail by the court.
Officials stated that the former governor would be released immediately once the required conditions are met.
