Israeli authorities have arrested a 25-year-old Israeli citizen from Baqa al-Gharbiya over allegations that he carried out security-related missions for Iranian intelligence operatives in exchange for money.
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Fahmi Mohammad Halaf, was arrested in recent weeks following a joint investigation by the Israel Police and Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency.
According to the authorities, Halaf allegedly established contact online with an Iranian agent and subsequently carried out a series of assignments at the direction of the contact. Investigators said he received financial payments amounting to thousands of shekels in return for carrying out the alleged missions.
Israeli authorities said the investigation involved officers from the Asher District Central Unit, the Lahav 433 cybercrime unit and Shin Bet.
Following the investigation, police and Shin Bet said they had established what they described as a substantial evidentiary basis against the suspect.
The Haifa District Prosecution is expected to file an indictment against Halaf at the Haifa District Court, with the allegations including offences related to contact with a foreign agent and activities considered harmful to state security.
The arrest comes amid heightened Israeli security concerns over alleged Iranian efforts to recruit Israeli citizens to carry out assignments inside the country.
According to Israeli authorities, suspects in several such cases have initially been approached through social media or online messaging platforms. Police and Shin Bet have therefore urged members of the public to exercise caution when communicating with unknown individuals online, particularly when they receive suspicious requests or offers of payment.
Israeli authorities have reported a number of arrests in recent years involving citizens suspected of cooperating with Iranian operatives. The cases have included allegations ranging from gathering information to carrying out assignments on behalf of foreign intelligence networks.
In Halaf's case, however, the specific missions he allegedly carried out have not been fully detailed in the initial announcement.
The allegations against the 25-year-old have not yet been established in court. He remains a suspect, and any determination of guilt will depend on the judicial process and evidence presented before the court.
The case is expected to attract further attention as prosecutors move forward with the planned indictment and more details about the investigation become available.
