The abducted pupils were reportedly taken during an attack linked to clashes between rival insurgent factions.
More than 50 pupils from Mussa Askira School in Uba Local Government Area of Borno State have reportedly been abducted by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The incident was disclosed by the President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, Samaila Kaigam, who alleged that the attack followed a clash between ISWAP fighters and a rival Boko Haram faction operating within the area.
According to Kaigam, the insurgents stormed the community during what was believed to be a revenge mission after failing to locate rival fighters they were pursuing.
He explained that the attackers eventually turned their attention to civilians within the community, leading to the abduction of dozens of pupils from the school.
The incident has intensified fears among residents already dealing with years of insurgency and violent attacks across parts of northeastern Nigeria.
Kaigam said efforts were ongoing to negotiate the release of some of the captives while authorities also worked to verify the condition and whereabouts of the abducted children.
The abduction adds to growing concerns over attacks on schools and communities within conflict-prone areas of Borno State despite ongoing military operations against insurgent groups.
Residents and local leaders have continued to call for stronger security presence in vulnerable communities, especially in areas frequently targeted by armed groups.
Security experts warn that continued clashes between rival insurgent factions could further destabilise communities and increase threats to civilians trapped within conflict zones.
The latest incident also highlights the persistent humanitarian and security challenges facing parts of northeastern Nigeria, where insurgent activities continue to disrupt education, livelihoods, and community safety.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing rescue efforts or confirming the exact number of abducted pupils.
