Team Nigeria’s Jessica Oji has qualified for the women’s shot put final at the ongoing 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Oregon, United States, after producing the best throw in the qualification round.
Oji recorded a mark of 17.56 metres, comfortably surpassing the automatic qualifying standard and finishing first overall among the athletes competing in the qualification round.The performance further underlines the 19-year-old’s rapid rise in international athletics after she recently delivered a historic performance for Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
At the Commonwealth Games, Oji won silver in the women’s shot put, becoming Nigeria’s first female Commonwealth shot put medallist in two decades and ending a long wait for the country in the discipline.Her latest performance in Oregon adds another major milestone to a remarkable 2026 season in which she has repeatedly rewritten records and established herself among the leading young shot putters.
Earlier this year, Oji produced an African and Nigerian record of 18.50 metres at the Ivy League Indoor Championships, where she also claimed gold.
That throw surpassed the previous African record and highlighted her potential to become one of Nigeria’s major stars in field events.
Oji’s qualification in Oregon also comes at a time when Team Nigeria is seeking stronger performances at the World U-20 Championships after some athletes reported challenges adjusting to the time difference following their arrival in the United States.
The young Nigerian will now turn her attention to the final, where she will compete for a place on the podium against the world’s best junior shot put athletes.
