Kano Doctors Threaten 2-Week Warning Strike From Oct 25 Over Unmet Demands

The Kano State chapter of the National Association of Government General and Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has issued a two-week warning strike notice to the Kano State Government, scheduled to commence at midnight on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The association stated that the industrial action follows repeated, unfulfilled promises and the continuous failure of the state government to address severe welfare grievances, acute staffing shortages, and decaying infrastructure across secondary and tertiary health facilities.

Addressing newsmen following an emergency congress meeting in Kano, union representatives revealed that despite multiple ultimatums and extended windows for diplomatic dialogue, state health authorities have shown a lack of commitment toward addressing their core operational concerns.

Structure (CONMESS) to match national standards. Full disbursement of accrued hazard allowances and arrears owed to medical officers across state-owned general hospitals. Rapid recruitment of additional doctors and specialists to replace retired or migrated personnel, relieving extreme burnout and heavy doctor-to-patient ratios in primary and secondary healthcare centers. Procurement of basic diagnostic tools, emergency life-support equipment, and functional infrastructure to ensure safe medical delivery.

If the state government fails to reach a binding settlement before the October 25 deadline, the two-week shutdown will cripple medical services across state-owned general hospitals, cottage centers, and maternal care facilities, leaving thousands of residents relying solely on private clinics.

NAGGMDP warned that should the state administration neglect to resolve the disputes during the two-week warning period, the union will be forced to escalate the industrial action into an indefinite, full-scale strike.

All eyes are now on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration and the Kano State Ministry of Health to initiate emergency conciliation meetings and avert a breakdown of health services.
