The Lagos State Government has announced an eight-week traffic diversion in the Ifako-Ijaiye area of the state to enable ongoing drainage and culvert construction works.

The project is part of efforts to improve stormwater management and reduce flooding challenges affecting communities along the Baale Animashaun Road corridor.

According to the announcement, the diversion will take effect from June 15, 2026, and is expected to last for eight weeks.

The construction work is focused on building a new culvert designed to channel stormwater from surrounding residential estates and adjoining streets through a more efficient drainage system.

Officials explained that the intervention is aimed at improving long-term road durability and reducing flood-related damage in the area.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the temporary road closure is necessary to ensure safe and efficient execution of the infrastructure project.

Motorists coming from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway heading toward Baale Animashaun Road will be required to use alternative routes during the construction period.

One of the approved diversion routes directs traffic through Ijaiye Bus Stop Junction via Agbado-Ijaiye Road and then connects through Alakuko Road before rejoining Baale Animashaun Road.

A second alternative route takes motorists through Jendor Junction near Alakuko Junction via Alhaji Ganiyu Road before linking back to the main corridor.

A third diversion option routes vehicles through Ajegunle-Ilo Bus Stop Junction, Adetiba Street, Fagbeyiro Abayomi Street, and Fola Azeez Street before reconnecting to Baale Animashaun Road.

The state government also confirmed that there will be no vehicular access into Baale Animashaun Road directly from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway throughout the construction period.

Traffic officials have been deployed to guide motorists and ensure smooth movement across alternative routes during the period of disruption.

Authorities urged road users to comply with traffic instructions, obey road signs, and cooperate with personnel managing the diversion to minimize congestion.

The government emphasized that the inconvenience is temporary and necessary for long-term improvements in drainage and road infrastructure within the Ifako-Ijaiye axis.

Residents and commuters in the area are expected to experience increased traffic along alternative routes, especially during peak hours.

Officials assured that the project is part of broader efforts to strengthen flood control systems and improve urban infrastructure resilience across Lagos State.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and consider additional travel time throughout the duration of the diversion.

The state government reiterated its commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure that enhances mobility, safety, and environmental protection across communities.
