Man City Need a ‘New Rodri’ After Midfielder’s Barcelona Move, Maresca Admits
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing his team following the departure of midfield maestro Rodri, admitting that the club needs to find a player capable of filling the void left by the Spain international.
Rodri completed a £65.4 million move to Barcelona earlier this month after helping Manchester City win four Premier League titles and the Champions League during his time at the club. The 30-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Spanish giants.
His departure leaves City without one of the most influential defensive midfielders in world football and creates a major problem for Maresca as he attempts to reshape the team following the end of the Pep Guardiola era.
Maresca has now admitted that City must find a “new Rodri” as they look to maintain their competitiveness at the highest level.
The midfielder's importance was underlined by City's performances during pre-season. The club suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield, with questions raised about weaknesses in the team's midfield and overall structure.
City did manage to begin their Premier League campaign with a victory, coming from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1. However, the performance also highlighted some of the adjustments Maresca still needs to make as he builds his side.
Manchester City have already been active in the transfer market as they search for solutions.
The club broke the British transfer record this summer by signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million, while they have also been linked with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Bouaddi, in particular, has emerged as an option for City's midfield rebuild, with the club holding talks with Lille over the highly rated young midfielder.
Replacing Rodri, however, will be a difficult task.
The Spaniard was not simply a defensive midfielder. He played a crucial role in City's possession-based football, controlling the tempo, protecting the defence and helping the team transition from defence into attack.
His ability to dictate matches made him one of the central figures of City's successful era under Guardiola.
Maresca therefore faces the challenge of finding a player who can either reproduce those qualities or develop a new tactical solution that allows City to operate effectively without him.
With the summer transfer window still open until September 1, City have limited time to strengthen their midfield.
The coming weeks could therefore be crucial for Maresca as he attempts to close the gap with Arsenal and build a Manchester City team capable of competing for major honours without the midfielder who has anchored their midfield for years.
