Tensions flared in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday morning, October 13, 2026, as hundreds of military veterans barricaded the main entrance of the Military Pensions Board (MPB) headquarters in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja.

The retired personnel were protesting what they described as an unfair and misleading calculation formula used by the board to execute recent consequential pension adjustments approved by the Federal Government.

Demonstrators arrived as early as 8:00 AM, setting up temporary barricades across the primary access gates using plastic canopies and chairs to block administrative staff and visitors from entering the premises. In response, armed soldiers stationed at the facility moved quickly to secure the inner perimeter, barring the protesters from gaining entry into the main building.

The anger stems from growing dissatisfaction among ex-servicemen regarding how recent salary increases for active military personnel were translated into pension payouts for retirees.

Speaking on behalf of the demonstrators, Lt. Col. Innocent Azubike (retd.), Coordinator of the Veterans Association of Nigeria, accused board administrators of adopting a service-year computation formula that allegedly short-changes retirees across multiple ranks.

Veterans argue that the adopted math fails to reflect the approved consequential adjustments and creates wide disparities in monthly entitlements compared to active pay structures.

"We served this nation honorably, and we deserve the true value of what was approved for us," one veteran stated during the demonstration. "The current formula applied by the board leaves many retirees underpaid."

The protest follows weeks of mounting agitation, including previous warnings issued to the Ministry of Defence. Coalition representatives of the military retirees have outlined several key demands:

  • Computation Review: An immediate audit and re-calculation of adjusted pensions affected by the disputed formula.

  • Transparency: Publication of clear computation guidelines and a breakdown explaining how the adjustment figures were derived.

  • Payment Timeline: A explicit, binding schedule for the payment of verified pension arrears.

  • Stakeholder Dialogue: An urgent consultative meeting between the Military Pensions Board, the Minister of Defence, and recognized veteran association leaders.

While Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), had previously assured veterans that updated pension scales would take full effect in October, protesters insist they will remain mobilized until official assurances are backed by concrete recalculations.

As of press time, military security forces maintain a watchful presence at the MPB gates while senior representatives from the board attempt to engage protest leaders in preliminary dialogue to de-escalate the standoff.
