MTN Unveils One TV Streaming Platform Across 16 African Markets

MTN Group has launched MTN One TV, a new pan-African streaming platform offering free, subscription-based, and pay-per-view content across 16 African markets as it expands into digital entertainment.

MTN Group has launched MTN One TV, a new pan-African streaming platform aimed at expanding the telecommunications giant’s presence in Africa’s fast-growing digital entertainment industry.

The newly unveiled platform will provide users with a variety of content access options, including free-to-view programming supported by advertisements, pay-per-view offerings, and subscription-based entertainment packages. MTN said the service has been designed to adapt to the unique needs and economic realities of each of the 16 African markets where the company operates.

The launch marks MTN’s most ambitious push yet into the content and streaming business. It comes nearly a decade after the company’s first attempt at building a digital entertainment platform. In 2014, MTN introduced FrontRow in South Africa, a streaming service that was later rebranded as VU. However, the platform struggled to gain traction against global and regional competitors such as Netflix and Showmax and was quietly discontinued in 2017.

With MTN One TV, the telecom operator is taking a broader and more integrated approach. By combining content delivery with its extensive telecommunications infrastructure, mobile payment solutions, and customer base across Africa, MTN hopes to position itself as a major player in the continent’s evolving digital media landscape.

The launch comes at a time when Africa’s digital entertainment economy is experiencing significant growth. Increasing smartphone adoption, improved internet connectivity, and a rising demand for locally relevant content have created new opportunities for telecom companies seeking to diversify their revenue streams beyond traditional voice and data services.

MTN is not alone in pursuing this strategy. Telecommunications companies across the continent are increasingly bundling entertainment services with connectivity and financial products to create comprehensive digital ecosystems. Industry players such as Vodacom, through its Value News Network initiative, and Safaricom have also been expanding their digital content offerings as competition intensifies.

Analysts say the success of MTN One TV will depend largely on the quality of its content library, pricing structure, and ability to provide localized programming that resonates with audiences in different African countries. The platform will also face competition from established global streaming services and regional players that have already secured strong positions in key markets.

Nevertheless, MTN’s extensive reach across Africa gives it a significant advantage as it seeks to attract millions of users to its latest digital venture. The company’s move signals a growing trend among African telecom operators to become full-service digital platforms, offering customers entertainment, connectivity, and financial services within a single ecosystem.
