Nigeria is taking steps towards establishing a national digital addressing system that will link verified identities to verified physical addresses across the country.
The initiative is expected to improve how individuals, businesses and government institutions identify and verify locations while strengthening the country's digital identity and addressing infrastructure.
The National Addressing Council has approved a preliminary framework for the proposed system, which will bring together key government agencies responsible for identity management, business registration and postal services. Under the proposed arrangement, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will be responsible for verifying individual addresses. This means that an individual's verified identity could eventually be connected to a confirmed residential or other relevant address.
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), on the other hand, will handle the verification of business addresses. The arrangement is expected to provide a more reliable way of confirming where registered businesses operate.
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) will continue to manage postcodes and postal infrastructure as part of the national addressing framework.
The proposed system represents an important step towards creating a more coordinated approach to addressing in Nigeria, where incomplete or inconsistent address information has often created challenges for businesses, government agencies, emergency services and individuals. A reliable digital addressing system could also support the delivery of public and private services by making it easier to confirm where people and organisations are physically located.
