Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has arrived in Anambra State for an official visit that will feature the launch of a major community food initiative and the commissioning of an ICT centre.
Tinubu arrived at the Chinua Achebe International Airport in Umueri on Thursday, where she was received by Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, and other senior state officials.
The governor and his wife welcomed the First Lady and members of her delegation at the airport tarmac after she disembarked from the aircraft, with the officials exchanging pleasantries before proceeding with the day’s programme.
The visit comes as part of Tinubu’s ongoing engagements around programmes focused on improving the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians, particularly women and children facing food and nutritional challenges.
A major highlight of the Anambra visit is the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East Zone, an initiative designed to provide nutritional support to vulnerable members of communities.
The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency and partners across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, according to officials involved in the initiative.
Dr Samuel Obasi, Director of the South-East Zone of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, said the programme was conceived to address the problem of malnutrition affecting children and women across the country.
The National Community Food Bank is expected to provide assistance to children and women identified as suffering from moderate or severe acute malnutrition, making the initiative an important component of the First Lady’s welfare-focused interventions.
In Anambra, the food bank is scheduled to be established at the Amawbia Primary Health Centre, where it will serve beneficiaries within Anambra Central Senatorial District while supporting other centres in the state’s North and South senatorial zones.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the connection between nutritional support and primary healthcare by targeting vulnerable beneficiaries through established health facilities.
Tinubu’s visit will also feature the commissioning of an Information and Communication Technology centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, adding a digital-development component to her engagements in the state.
The ICT centre is expected to provide an avenue for improved access to digital resources and technology-driven opportunities within the institution and its surrounding community.
The combination of food and nutrition support with digital infrastructure highlights the broad range of issues being addressed during the First Lady’s visit to Anambra.
