Olabisi Onabanjo University has secured a place among Nigeria’s top 10 universities in the July 2026 Webometrics Global Ranking.
The Ogun State-based institution ranked eighth in Nigeria, 57th in Africa and 2,338th globally out of about 32,000 universities assessed.
The improved performance has earned praise from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OOU branch, which commended the university's management for what it described as a significant achievement.
ASUU-OOU particularly praised Vice-Chancellor Professor Ayodeji Agboola and his management team for their leadership and contribution to the institution's progress.
The union attributed the improved ranking to stronger visibility, academic productivity, research output, digital presence and growing international recognition.
ASUU also acknowledged the contributions of academic and non-academic staff, students and other members of the university community.
The union said the ranking demonstrated what purposeful leadership, cooperation and a shared vision could achieve within the institution.
ASUU-OOU therefore urged members of the university community to continue supporting the management in order to sustain and improve the gains recorded in recent years.
The union also warned against actions or distractions capable of undermining the progress made by the institution.
It stressed that the overall interest of Olabisi Onabanjo University should remain the priority of management, staff, students, unions and other stakeholders.
The latest ranking represents a notable improvement in OOU's position and provides another indicator of the institution's growing presence within Nigeria's higher education sector.
The Webometrics ranking assesses universities using indicators linked to their online visibility, research presence and digital impact.
For OOU, the latest result places the university among Nigeria's leading institutions and provides a stronger platform for further improvements in research, innovation and global visibility.
ASUU's response also highlights the importance of maintaining the momentum rather than treating the ranking as an end in itself.
The union called for continued collective efforts to consolidate the institution's progress and position it for even stronger performance in future rankings.
