Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has thrown his weight behind the proposed death penalty for convicted kidnappers and bandits in Edo State.
Speaking during a public engagement, Oshiomhole described kidnapping as one of the gravest threats to public safety, arguing that stronger punishment is necessary to deter criminal activities across the country.
His comments followed the recent proposal by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo to introduce capital punishment for individuals convicted of kidnapping and banditry.
According to Oshiomhole, Nigerians deserve to live without fear, stressing that communities have suffered enormous losses due to the activities of criminal gangs operating across several states.
He argued that criminals who deliberately abduct innocent citizens for ransom and engage in violent attacks should face the full weight of the law.
The senator maintained that government has a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, adding that effective justice must serve both as punishment and deterrence.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions among legal experts and human rights advocates, with some supporting tougher penalties while others insist that addressing the root causes of insecurity should remain a priority.
Security challenges including kidnapping, banditry and armed attacks continue to affect many communities across Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for stronger legislative and security measures.
