The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Matilda Ngbaronye, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Festac Division, following surgery at a medical centre in Surulere, Lagos.
Ngbaronye reportedly died on Friday, October 24, 2025, at Mayriamville Medical Centre, located on Bode Thomas Street, Surulere. The police announced her death in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, on Saturday, October 25.
The announcement sparked grief within the police community, with colleagues and other Nigerians mourning the loss of an officer remembered for her dedication to duty.
In its statement, the Lagos State Police Command described Ngbaronye as a disciplined and upright officer who served with professionalism and integrity.
The command also praised her friendly disposition and humane approach to policing, saying these qualities helped strengthen relations between the police and members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, alongside other officers, extended condolences to her family, including her husband and elderly mother.
The command said the news of her death came as a shock and promised to communicate burial arrangements in due course.
Ngbaronye served in several capacities during her career in the Nigeria Police Force. Before her posting to Festac Division, she held other responsibilities within the Lagos State Police Command, including service at Iponri Division.
She was also reported to have worked in investigative and public relations roles, including at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti and the Public Complainants Bureau.
Her career further included service with the African Union Mission in Somalia, where she worked as a public information officer.
Her experience across operational, investigative and public communication duties formed part of her record in the police service.
Although reports confirmed that Ngbaronye died after undergoing surgery, the police statement did not disclose the specific medical condition that led to the procedure.
No conclusion should therefore be drawn about the cause of death beyond the details officially reported.
Her passing represents a loss for the Lagos State Police Command and the family she left behind. The command’s tribute highlighted her commitment to duty and the importance of maintaining constructive relationships between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.
