A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large wooden crucifix fell on him during a church service, just minutes after he delivered a sermon reflecting on death and the importance of using life meaningfully.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari died on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while celebrating Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The incident was captured during a livestream of the service.
In his homily shortly before the accident, the priest reminded worshippers that death is inevitable and encouraged them to devote more time to God and their loved ones.
“One day, all of us here will also die,” he told the congregation, according to Ecuadorian media reports.
He went on to reflect on how people sometimes spend much of their time on work, mobile phones, entertainment and other daily activities while neglecting their spiritual lives and relationships with family members.
His words took on a tragic significance when the heavy wooden crucifix mounted behind him suddenly detached from the wall and struck him as he stood at the altar.
Footage from the livestream showed the crucifix falling onto the priest, leaving worshippers shocked. Some members of the congregation could be heard crying out for help and asking for an ambulance.
The service was interrupted as people rushed towards the altar following the impact.
The circumstances that caused the crucifix to detach from the wall have not been publicly established. Authorities had not issued a detailed explanation of the incident in the initial reports.
The livestream circulated on social media following the tragedy, drawing widespread attention to the priest’s final moments and his earlier reflection on mortality.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Sánchez Molinari’s death in a statement expressing condolences to his religious community, family and friends.
The priest belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, a Catholic religious order.
He served as parish priest at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Guayaquil and had previously served in other communities, including Vinces.
Church officials and fellow religious communities mourned his death and remembered his pastoral service.
The priest’s final homily centred on the importance of balancing everyday responsibilities with faith, family and meaningful relationships.
He encouraged worshippers to consider how they spend their time, noting that material pursuits and routine activities should not overshadow their spiritual lives or the people closest to them.
His death shortly after delivering the message has prompted emotional reactions from people who watched the footage or read reports of the incident.
While the timing of his final words has drawn particular attention, church officials have not suggested any connection between the sermon and the accident. The tragedy remains a fatal incident involving a falling crucifix during a religious service.
Sánchez Molinari’s death has left members of his parish and the wider Catholic community in mourning.
