Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has disclosed that his administration has committed more than ₦1 billion to scholarship programmes within the last three years.
Describing education as one of the most effective tools for reducing poverty, creating opportunities, and building a more prosperous future for young Nigerians.
While reaffirming his government's commitment to ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent talented students from accessing quality education.
The governor made the disclosure during a scholarship disbursement event in Kaduna, where he highlighted the impact of the initiative on students across the state, explaining that the programme was designed to provide support for indigent and academically gifted students pursuing higher education in Nigeria and abroad.
Also encouraging academic excellence and human capital development among young people.
According to Uba Sani, the scholarship scheme forms part of a broader strategy aimed at investing in the future of Kaduna State through education, skills development, and youth empowerment.
Noting that governments must prioritize long-term investments in people rather than focusing solely on physical infrastructure, because sustainable development depends largely on the quality of human resources available to drive economic growth and innovation.
The governor explained that beneficiaries of the programme have received support covering tuition fees, educational materials, and other academic expenses, helping many students remain in school despite the economic pressures affecting households across the country, while also giving deserving youths the opportunity to pursue professional careers that may have otherwise remained beyond their reach.
Sani further stated that the scholarship initiative aligns with his administration's wider education reform agenda, which includes the construction and rehabilitation of schools, recruitment of teachers, expansion of learning facilities, and efforts to improve access to quality education in both urban and rural communities, stressing that education remains a cornerstone of his government's development priorities.
He noted that investing in education yields benefits that extend beyond individual beneficiaries, as educated citizens contribute to economic productivity, social stability, innovation, and community development, adding that scholarship programmes serve as strategic investments that help nurture future leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and public servants capable of contributing meaningfully to society.
The governor also urged scholarship recipients to remain focused on their studies and make productive use of the opportunities provided to them, emphasizing that the ultimate goal of the programme is not only to support academic achievement but also to develop responsible citizens who can use their knowledge and skills to address societal challenges and contribute to national development.
Education stakeholders have continued to describe scholarship schemes as important interventions at a time when rising tuition costs and broader economic challenges are placing increasing pressure on students and families, with many experts arguing that sustained investment in educational support programmes can significantly improve access to higher education and reduce inequality among young people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
Observers say Kaduna State's continued investment in scholarships reflects a growing recognition among subnational governments that human capital development is essential for long-term economic competitiveness, particularly as states seek to equip young people with the knowledge and skills required in an increasingly technology-driven and knowledge-based global economy.
As the programme continues to expand, the Kaduna State Government says it remains committed to supporting deserving students and strengthening educational opportunities across the state, with officials expressing confidence that the investment will produce lasting benefits for both individual beneficiaries and the broader society in the years ahead.
