António Guterres has condemned recent xenophobic attacks and intimidation targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, urging authorities and communities to reject violence and hatred.

In a statement delivered through his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the United Nations Secretary-General expressed deep concern over reports of violence in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Guterres strongly denounced criminal attacks and incitement against migrants, warning that discrimination and vigilantism threaten social stability and human dignity.

The UN chief also reminded the international community that South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle was built on global solidarity and support from different nations around the world.

He stressed that democratic societies must uphold tolerance, coexistence, and the protection of vulnerable groups regardless of nationality or background.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over recurring anti-foreigner violence in parts of South Africa, where economic hardship, unemployment, and social tensions have often fueled hostility toward migrants and foreign-owned businesses.

Human rights groups have continued to call for stronger protection measures and public awareness campaigns to combat xenophobia across the country.
