The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has officially launched a modern cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory within its Computer Science Department. The facility is equipped with advanced tools and infrastructure designed to support cutting-edge teaching, research, and innovation in emerging technology fields.
The project was made possible through the support of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy under the Technology Innovation and Development for Competitiveness (TIDC) initiative. The unveiling marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s effort to strengthen its digital ecosystem and develop a future-ready workforce.
The laboratory was commissioned in March 2026 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.
Key stakeholders include the University of Nigeria administration, the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, and stakeholders under the TIDC project. Academic staff, students, and researchers within the Computer Science Department are expected to directly benefit from the new facility.
The launch of this research lab comes at a time when cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are rapidly shaping global economies. By investing in modern digital infrastructure, UNN is positioning itself as a leading institution in technological innovation and research in Nigeria and across Africa.
The facility will provide students with hands-on experience in cybersecurity systems, data protection, machine learning, and AI-driven solutions. This is expected to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, making graduates more competitive in the global job market.
“This laboratory represents a major step forward in our commitment to advancing digital education and innovation. It will empower our students and researchers to develop solutions that address real-world challenges in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence,” said a university official.
The Technology Innovation and Development for Competitiveness (TIDC) project is part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to drive digital transformation, support research institutions, and foster innovation across Nigeria.
With cyber threats on the rise globally, the establishment of a dedicated cybersecurity lab will also contribute to national security by building a pool of skilled professionals capable of protecting critical digital infrastructure.
Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence tools in the lab will enable research in areas such as automation, data analytics, smart systems, and digital solutions for industries including healthcare, finance, agriculture, and education.
