Nigerians have an opportunity to apply for the 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, which offers professional development opportunities in the United Kingdom for eligible mid-career professionals and university academics.
The programme has two strands: Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for experienced professionals and Commonwealth Academic Fellowships for university staff who hold PhDs.
Who Can Apply?
Professional Fellowship applicants must have at least five years of relevant work experience by the start of the fellowship.
Academic Fellowship applicants must hold a PhD and be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country.
Applicants must also be citizens or permanent residents of an eligible Commonwealth country, including Nigeria, and must have an organisation they will return to after completing the fellowship.
What Areas Are Covered?
The fellowships focus on six development themes, including science and technology, health systems, innovation and entrepreneurship, peace and governance, crisis resilience, and access, inclusion and opportunity.
Professional fellowships will last between six weeks and three months, while academic fellowships will run for three months.
What Does It Cover?
The programme provides approved return airfare, reimbursement of the standard UK visa application fee and a monthly stipend.
The published stipend rate is £2,218 per month, rising to £2,753 for fellows hosted in the London metropolitan area, based on the applicable rates. An arrival allowance may also be provided.
How to Apply
Interested Nigerians must complete the online Commonwealth Fellowship application through the official Commonwealth Scholarship Commission application portal.
Applicants will provide their academic qualifications, employment history, references, personal statement and information explaining the development impact of their proposed fellowship.
They will also need to demonstrate how they intend to use the skills gained in the UK after returning home.
