The African Action Congress (AAC), which has adopted human rights activist Omoyele Sowore as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, has written to President Bola Tinubu requesting permission to hold its Presidential Campaign Council inauguration at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The party also asked the Federal Government to provide food, drinks and logistical support for 5,000 participants expected to attend the proposed event.
The requests were contained in a letter dated October 21, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Secretary, Oshiokhue Philip Ikpeminoghena.
According to reports published on Wednesday, the AAC proposed November 11, 2026, for the inauguration, describing the event as part of its preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
In its letter, the opposition party said its request was based on the principles of multiparty democracy, political inclusiveness and equal treatment of political parties.
The AAC reportedly cited the inauguration of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on October 14 as the basis for its appeal.
The party argued that public institutions should serve all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, and said granting its request would demonstrate the Presidency’s commitment to fairness and equal access.
It also asked the President to communicate the procedures and conditions that would apply if the request were approved.
The AAC said it was hopeful of receiving a favourable response from Tinubu.
Sowore, a publisher and human rights activist, contested the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections under the AAC. He is again the party’s candidate for the next presidential contest.
The request comes as political parties prepare their campaign structures and begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
The proposed use of the Presidential Villa for an opposition party’s campaign council inauguration is likely to draw attention to questions about access to public facilities and the use of government resources during election preparations.
While the AAC says its request is intended to promote fairness among political parties, its appeal does not mean that the venue or the requested support has been approved.
As of the latest reports on October 21, there was no confirmed public response from the Presidency regarding the AAC’s request.
The party has asked for both the venue and practical support for the expected participants, leaving the decision on whether the arrangements will be granted to the President and the relevant authorities. The outcome could become a talking point in discussions about political inclusiveness, public resources and the treatment of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
