A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa (popularly known as "Daddy"), to death by hanging for the murder of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
Delivering judgment on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the presiding judge dismissed the defendant's not-guilty plea, holding that the prosecution had successfully established the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt through credible evidence and witness testimony.
The crime occurred in the early hours of January 4, 2024, at the couple’s residence in the New Bra-Bra Housing Estate in Damaturu, Yobe State.
According to police reports, officers at the "C" Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress call around 4:48 a.m. regarding a violent domestic incident. Responding operatives found the victim suffering from severe neck injuries inflicted with a sharp object while the couple was in bed.
Despite emergency medical intervention, Mamman succumbed to heavy blood loss caused by the deep neck wounds. Following preliminary investigations, homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) arrested Musa at the scene.
The victim, Ammi Adamu Mamman, was an active community volunteer working with civil society groups in Yobe State. Her brutal death triggered widespread outrage from gender-rights advocates and local human rights organizations, which called for a thorough trial and maximum legal penalties.
Following the court's verdict, legal representatives and civil rights advocates commended the judiciary for its swift handling of the trial, describing the sentence as a vital step toward deterring domestic violence and upholding justice for victims of gender-based violence.
