The Federal Government is set to introduce a free daily data initiative that will give students across Nigeria access to 100MB of internet data from October 1, 2026.
The initiative is aimed at helping students access educational websites, digital learning platforms and other online resources without having to bear the full cost of internet connectivity.
The planned intervention comes at a time when access to affordable internet has become increasingly important to education, particularly as Nigerian students rely more on online materials, digital libraries, virtual classes, research platforms and other technology-driven learning tools.
The development also comes months after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan facilitated the installation of a free campus-wide Wi-Fi facility at the Federal College of Education, Okene, in Kogi State.
The senator's July 2026 initiative was designed to improve students' access to digital resources and support teaching, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. Students welcomed the facility, saying it could reduce the financial burden of purchasing internet data while improving access to online courses and digital libraries.
The Federal Government's proposed 100MB daily data initiative could extend that same digital-access approach to a much wider student population.
For many students, especially those from low-income households, the cost of mobile data can be a barrier to consistent online learning. Providing dedicated daily data could therefore make it easier for students to conduct research, download educational materials, participate in digital courses and develop technology-related skills.
Beyond academic activities, improved internet access could also expose young Nigerians to online certification programmes, artificial intelligence tools, software development, entrepreneurship resources and remote-work opportunities.
The move is also expected to support Nigeria's broader digital inclusion goals by encouraging students to make greater use of online educational resources.
However, the effectiveness of the programme will depend on reliable implementation, including clear eligibility requirements, access procedures and adequate network coverage across institutions and communities.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could provide an important boost to digital education and help reduce the connectivity gap affecting students in different parts of the country.
Affordable internet access can give Nigerian students greater opportunities to learn, build digital skills and connect with educational and career opportunities beyond the classroom.
