Former Delta State Governor Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has passed away at the age of 71. His family officially announced his transition on Monday morning, October 19, 2026, disclosing that the former leader passed away after a brief illness—just three days shy of his 72nd birthday.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement issued on behalf of the family by Toju Anire Uduaghan. A medical doctor by profession, Dr. Uduaghan was a central figure in the political landscape of the oil-rich Niger Delta state for over two decades.

Before assuming the state's highest political office, he served as the Commissioner for Health between 1999 and 2003 under the administration of James Ibori, after which he was appointed Secretary to the State Government (SSG) from 2003 to 2007.

Uduaghan subsequently succeeded Ibori as executive governor, serving two full terms from May 2007 to May 2015 under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure was characterized by a focus on peacebuilding in the Niger Delta, infrastructural upgrades, free maternal and childcare healthcare programs, and economic diversification strategies tagged "Delta Beyond Oil."

News of his passing has drawn widespread tributes from political leaders, former colleagues, and stakeholders across the nation. Tributes highlighted his contributions to healthcare reforms, conflict resolution in the Niger Delta, and regional governance.

The Uduaghan family expressed gratitude to friends and well-wishers for their support while requesting privacy as funeral arrangements are finalized.
