Ikeje Asogwa, Kingsley Nweke Make 2026 NUJ Enugu Award Nomination List

••2 min read

Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Kingsley Nweke, have been nominated for recognition at the 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council awards.

The two political figures were nominated in recognition of their reported contributions to human development, education, youth empowerment, institutional growth and community advancement.

Asogwa's nomination is linked to his involvement in educational development and human capital investment, particularly his previous role at the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB).

During his time at the board, he was associated with efforts to improve educational infrastructure and strengthen teachers' capacity across the state.

His nomination highlights the importance of investment in education and the role of public office holders in supporting the development of institutions that serve communities.

Nweke, on the other hand, was recognised for his involvement in youth and women empowerment, philanthropy and grassroots sports development.

He has supported several community-based football competitions and festivals, including the Coal Camp Festival, Coal Camp Football Competition, Abakpa Football Competition, Obiagu Football Competition and Boolu Ogbe.

These initiatives have provided opportunities for young people to participate in organised sporting activities and showcase their football talents.

Some players who participated in grassroots competitions have reportedly progressed to higher levels of the sport, including opportunities within the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Nweke's nomination reflects the role of private individuals and community initiatives in creating platforms for young people to develop their abilities and pursue opportunities in sports.

The 2026 nominations also draw attention to the contributions of individuals outside traditional government structures in promoting education, supporting vulnerable groups and encouraging community development.

The NUJ Enugu State Council's recognition is expected to bring together stakeholders from the media, politics, business and other sectors to celebrate individuals whose activities have made contributions to society.

The nominations of Asogwa and Nweke place their respective contributions in the spotlight as the council prepares to recognise individuals and organisations across different areas of public life.
