The Nigerian Army has commenced the deployment of 600 personnel to India for specialized military training focused on jungle, mountain, and asymmetric warfare techniques.
The strategic capacity-building initiative forms part of ongoing bilateral military cooperation between Nigeria and India, aimed at enhancing the tactical operational efficiency of troops engaged in complex counter-insurgency, anti-banditry, and internal security operations across the country.
According to military authorities, the overseas training program is structured into two main operational cohorts of 300 personnel each:
First Contingent: The initial batch of 300 soldiers departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for designated military training facilities in India.
Second Phase Logistics: Arrangements and flight scheduling are currently finalized to airlift the remaining 300 troops to complete the 600-personnel deployment roster.
Military officials emphasized that the specialized curriculum in India is tailored to meet modern operational challenges encountered in difficult terrains across Nigeria’s combat theaters:
Jungle and Mountain Operations: Mastering tactical maneuverability, tracking, and survival in dense foliage and high-altitude mountain environments.
Asymmetric and Counter-Terrorism Tactics: Strengthening response strategies against non-state armed groups, ambushes, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Integration and Doctrine Standardisation: Translating advanced tactics into joint tactical operations upon their return to operational sectors in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions.
The Army High Command noted that returning personnel will serve as key instructors and core tactical operators, stepping up troop readiness and counter-threat capabilities in ongoing national defence missions.
