President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the launch of the Power Force Programme, a new youth empowerment initiative under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) that will train and employ 5,000 young Nigerians as electricity meter installers and technicians.

The programme is part of the Federal Government's broader efforts to address Nigeria's metering gap, reduce estimated billing, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the country's electricity distribution system.

According to President Tinubu, the initiative will provide participants with practical technical training that equips them with the skills required to install, maintain, and support electricity metering infrastructure across the country.

The President said the programme is expected to create thousands of jobs while helping to improve transparency and accountability in electricity billing. He noted that increasing the number of properly metered customers will ensure consumers pay only for the electricity they consume, reduce commercial losses for electricity distribution companies, and encourage greater investment in Nigeria's power sector.

To ensure the successful implementation of the initiative, President Tinubu directed the Presidential Metering Initiative to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), and other relevant stakeholders to commence the programme within the next 30 days.

The Power Force Programme also aligns with the Federal Government's commitment to youth empowerment through skills development, vocational training, and employment opportunities in critical sectors of the economy.

In addition to addressing unemployment, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing reform of Nigeria's electricity sector by expanding the country's technical workforce responsible for meter deployment and maintenance.

Officials say the programme will reserve a dedicated quota for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), providing corps members with an opportunity to acquire practical technical skills and gain employment experience in the energy sector.
