WFUNA invites aspiring global communicators to gain real-world UN experience — from anywhere in the world

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) has officially opened applications for a remote Communications Assistant Internship, giving aspiring communicators around the world the chance to contribute directly to the work of one of the most respected UN-affiliated organisations on the planet.

According to a listing published on Global South Opportunities (globalsouthopportunities.com) on 1st April 2026, the position is open globally, starts in April 2026, and is designed for individuals who want hands-on experience in international communications without leaving their home country.

WFUNA, established in 1946 — just one year after the United Nations itself — is a global nonprofit dedicated to strengthening and promoting a more effective United Nations. It represents over 100 United Nations Associations and thousands of members worldwide, with permanent offices at UN Headquarters in New York, Geneva, and Seoul, South Korea. For nearly eight decades, the organisation has been a bridge between global citizens and the UN system, championing international cooperation and dialogue across borders.

"WFUNA is a global nonprofit organization working for a stronger and more effective United Nations... We work to build a better world by strengthening and improving the United Nations, through the engagement of people who share a global mindset and support international cooperation."

— WFUNA — Official Position Description, March 2026

The Communications Assistant will work closely with WFUNA's Communications Consultants to plan and execute communications across social media, email campaigns, conference content, and digital storytelling.

Responsibilities span graphic design, short-form video production, content development, audience engagement, and participant-facing conference communications. The role is fully remote and structured to be largely asynchronous, with scheduled check-ins and training sessions to provide ongoing guidance. The internship runs between three and six months, depending on project needs and the candidate's availability.

The opportunity is particularly significant for young professionals and students across Africa and the Global South, where direct access to UN-affiliated work experience is often limited by geography, cost, or visa barriers. This role eliminates all of those obstacles. Whether you are based in Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, or any city in the world, you can apply, contribute, and build a career-defining portfolio from where you are.

Applicants should be currently pursuing or holding a degree in Communications, Marketing, International Relations, Political Science, Business, Design, or a related field. Proficiency in Canva is required, and familiarity with CapCut or Adobe Premiere Pro is strongly preferred. Strong written and verbal English, the ability to work independently in a remote environment, and a high level of professionalism and attention to detail are all essential. Prior UN or Model UN experience is advantageous but not required, making this accessible to first-time applicants looking to break into the international arena.

While the position is unpaid, the professional value it offers is substantial — from building a communications portfolio within a globally recognised framework, to gaining exposure to international campaigns, conferences, and the UN ecosystem. Candidates who are selected join a network of global citizens actively shaping how the world understands and engages with the United Nations.

📌 HOW TO APPLY

Follow these steps carefully — applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so the sooner you apply, the better.

1️⃣ Prepare your documents: Write your cover letter and update your resume — combine both into ONE document

2️⃣ Build your portfolio: Compile samples of your design, social media, or video work into a portfolio

3️⃣ Send your application: Email everything to internships@wfuna.org

4️⃣ Subject line: Type exactly: "Communications Assistant"

5️⃣ Language: All materials must be submitted in English

6️⃣ Deadline: April 17, 2026 by 11:59 PM Eastern Time (ET) — apply early

⚠️ Please note: WFUNA may close applications before the deadline once a suitable candidate is found. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Do not send applications to Global South Opportunities — apply directly to WFUNA only.

For young communicators across Africa and the Global South, this is more than an internship — it is a doorway into the United Nations system, and a chance to shape global conversations from wherever you are.
